MEET MARY CHOW THE COUNSELLOR

As a counsellor, my role is to guide you through the process of change and help you find your own resources, that are emotional, spiritual , relational and physical. All of these insights will contribute to your change. If there is a significant amount of trauma then I may use a technique called Observed & Experiential Integration (O.E.I). The science behind this technique is described on the website: www.sightpsych.com. It is a technique that uses eye movement to access and release traumatic memories in the brain so that people who are reactive, as a result of trauma, can feel released from that reactivity. I will use this technique integrated with other counselling techniques to help people haunted by trauma. I consider all the counselling that I do both a privilege and an honour as people allow me a window into their hearts. I am continually amazed at people’s strengths in the midst of very difficult circumstances. I strive to help each client recognize and develop those strengths.

MY BACKGROUND

I am a graduate of the Masters of Counselling Psychology program at Trinity Western University in Langley, B.C. I received my nursing degree from Queens University in 1981 and proceeded to work as a nurse in various hospitals over the years. I have also had experience running a small business while sharing these responsibilities with my husband since 1989. We have raised 2 sons of our own and I have been very involved in various volunteer work with children and families. I completed a Elijah House Christian Counselling Course in 1995. I was also involved in the listening prayer community doing prayer counselling. This is what led me to have a desire for more counselling tools to help people of other faiths or without a faith base. This eventually led me to go back to school to complete the Masters program in Counselling Psychology. I seek to be inclusive of each individual's spiritual values and beliefs in the process.
